Alene Bock--Folk Songs

Alene's Story

I am a "single" performer. I sing and accompany myself on acoustic guitar. My repertoire consists of American, English and Scottish folk ballads and contemporary easy listening and country. I am equally "at home" on stage with amplification (1 have my own equipment) or as a strolling musician.

I have performed professionally since 1967. I started out in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the Levee Club, The Hangar Club, My Place, Inn of the Fisherman, various other private clubs (also political rallies and local TV). While living in Little Rock, I sang in Basin Park at Eureka Springs, Arkansas, during the Folk Festival, and at the Half and Half Coffee House, in Memphis, Tennessee.

In September, 1968, we (my husband, Donald, who is also my manager, our three children, and I) moved to Norfolk, Virginia. While there, I worked at Trader Nick's, the Surfrider, the Lighthouse, and Heritage House in Virginia Beach.

In early 1969, we moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. While there, I performed at the Red Bean, the Sphinx, Bayou Room, and Little Joe's.

In October, 1969, we moved to Houston, Texas. Some of the clubs and restaurants where I entertained from that time through 1979 are: The Escape and Regatta Inn, Seabrook; Willie's Pub and the Leather Bottle, Old Market Square, Houston; Gulf Freeway Steak and Ale and Memorial Drive Steak and Ale; Geo Club, Astro-Knight Club, Senate Club, Larry's Main 2016 Club, Cafe de la Paix, and Alexander's, all in Houston; Red Bluff Villas Club, Pasadena; Friendly Folk House, Gulfgate; and the Houston Yacht Club, LaPorte.

In October, 1979, we discovered the Texas Renaissance Festival, an authentic sixteenth century English village, about 60 miles north ofHouston, Texas. At that time, it operated for six weekends each year, during October and November. For the past several years, it has been extended to seven weekends. We went once as spectators and decided we would like to participate. Although auditions were held in April, Donald persuaded Carol Palmer (Queen Anne Boleyn, and the wife of Bill Palmer, alias Merlin the Magician, who was in charge ofhiring performers) to listen to me over the telephone, and, on her say-so, Bill allowed me to come in as a walk-on, the following weekend. This began a 6-year association with the Texas Renaissance Festival, through 1985. (1 came back to the Festival for the 1999 and 2000 seasons and was offered a contract for the 2001 season by JeffBaldwin, but declined because 6 weeks is a little too long to be away from our activities here in Arkansas. ) During our second Festival, Bill Palmer became aware of Donald's knowledge of black powder and enlisted him to fire the cannon to signal the opening of the gates at 9:00 a.m., and the beginning of the Grand March at Noon. January 2 through January 11, 1981, I was a strolling musician at the Houston International Boat Show in the Astrohall.

Usually, on weekends, however, we were in Mountain View, Arkansas, visiting with our good friends, Jimmy and Cleda Driftwood, singing at the Driftwood Barn , and picking with the folks at the Signal Hill Dulcimer Shop.

In January, 1984, we returned to Houston, Texas, and opened Bock Auto Repair, which limited my performing time considerably.
